Karla Sofía Gascón talks about the two years of training that went into this demanding role in Jacques Audiard’s film and the two extremes of her own personality that she had to play as Emilia and Manitas. Jacques Audiard said he got the idea for the musical from a chapter in a novel about a drug dealer who longs to change his identity.

It balances each genre and gives it enough time in a way that doesn’t make it feel like too much.

Every acting performance in this movie is outstanding, especially Zoe Saldana in the first half of the movie and Karla Sofía Gascón in the second half. Unfortunately, everything about Selena Gomez in terms of acting performance and her character needed more effort to be put in. A very weak character who was just there as a filler to complicate things for the main protagonist and the events of the story.

While Musicals aren’t my thing, this movie handled that part in such a unique way that made each song creative in terms of direction and lyrics. Two songs that really caught my attention was one that touched on a political aspect of Mexico that had such a creative and unique direction.
